Arthritis is a common disease which causes chronic pain and loss of movement. To date no effective cure has been found for it, and sufferers are aware that this life long affliction will affect every aspect of their daily lives.
Arthritis Foundation (India), AF(I) aims to reach out to arthritis sufferers by creating awareness about the disease, its treatment options and how to cope with it.
1. At the present time this is being achieved through Awareness Programmes open to the public, distribution of educational material - pamphlets and joint care/exercise booklets and through personal counselling and guidance in Bangalore. Advice and support is also extended to people all over the country.
2. AF(I) extends financial and practical support to arthritis sufferers all over India with a special focus on treatment for poor patients. This includes providing care and assistance through medication, physiotherapy, assistive aids and surgery when needed, for those who cannot afford it - depending on funds available.
3. AF(I) also works to promote medical and social research in arthritis.
AF(I) is based at HOSMAT (Hospital for Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Arthritis and Trauma) and Dr.Thomas Chandy, Chairman and Managing Director and Chief of Orthopaedics, HOSMAT, is its Chairman. The affairs of AF(I) are supervised by a Board of five Trustees and a Managing Committee conducts the daily activities of the Foundation.
AF(I) is an independent, non-profit organisation and is wholly dependent for its future success on the aspects of public involvement like donations and volunteers/ members. It is a registered Charitable Trust, enjoying recognition Under Sec.80G of the Income Tax Act.
